Gingerbreads

Gingerbreads are something we bake a lot before Christmas. I love how they fill the home with a spicy scent. The best part of gingerbread baking is the decoration phase. The white frosting looks beautiful on a brown cookie. It is magical how something so simple as sugar and water can create such beautiful figures and forms.

This time I used ready-made gingerbread dough because I wanted to use my limited time for cutting and decorating them nicely. We don’t have many gingerbread cutters so I made my own. I drew a flower with six petals on a sheet of paper. To draw the circles of the petals even you can use a round object such as a tiny lid (tape roll works also very well!).

After rolling out the dough I placed my hand-drawn paper flower on top of the dough and used a knife to cut the flowers. We had a round cutter that I used for the hole in the middle. Leftover parts from the middle I also baked and they made cute round cookies. For the big round cookies, I used a glass as my cutter and then just cut the inside part off as I did with the flowers.

I like that my cookies aren't traditional stars and hearts this year. I got inspired by the seasonal wreaths so that’s why there is the hole in the middle. Also, the decoration gets its inspiration from nature. I see them as garlands and flowers going around the cookies.

For the small gingerbreads, I made little holes to the top so that I can attach them to a string. I am planning on hanging the gingerbread garland to our kitchen. Small gingerbreads could also make lovely decorations on Christmas presents as name tags for example.
