Capture stunning flower photos

We are living in such a lovely season now. Summer is around the corner and flowers, they are everywhere! It’s time to share the best tips to capture stunning flower photos.

Use a simple background.

Make flowers eye-catchers by pairing them with simple things. This way the flowers pop up. Pay extra attention to the background. It shouldn’t be too busy because flowers are often quite complex and detailed. Let the rest of the photo be calm and simple.

Use sidelight.

Flowers are three-dimensional and that’s why side light works especially well with them. Light makes the form visible and reveals textures better. Many flowers have layers and side light creates light and shadow areas in a way that the layers can be seen.

Layer flowers.

Layer to create the feeling of space. My favorite is to layer flowers so that something is in the front, out of focus. The photo gets depth when there are elements blocking the view a bit. This comes naturally when you shoot flowers outside, like blooming trees. You can create the composition in a way that in front of the focus point, there are some branches blocking the main point. This creates an illusion of abundance.

Shadows.

It doesn’t always have to be about the light. Flowers create interesting shadows and let light through differently. Explore what kind of shadows you can create with different flowers.

Add another element.

Pair flowers with another showstopper to create a stunning photo. Make sure your element is not overshadowing flowers since you want flowers to draw attention too. The best thing is if you can through composition, framing, and editing make the two elements support each other.

Go close.

Flowers have so beautiful details that you can’t always notice if you don’t go close enough. Flowers love close-up shots. We find detail shots fascinating because flowers aren’t often seen this way.

Use the weather.

Take advantage of the current weather to make your flower photo stunning. A windy day or sunset can give that little extra to your photo and make it memorable.

Create drama.

Drama and flowers go well together. Drama comes from exaggeration. You can create contrasts and play with colors. Make them strong to create drama.

Fill the entire frame with flowers.

A photo can be stunning even when there is just one type of flower, but there is plenty and they fill the whole frame. Make simplicity the superpower and emphasize that one thing by giving it all the attention.

Match the colors.

Make all the colors in your photo match beautifully together. Take the colors from the flowers and add props with similar tones.

All about flowers, or maybe not?

A stunning flower photo doesn’t always have to be all about flowers. Flowers can support the main object too. This way the flowers play a side role but without them, the main object wouldn’t be so interesting.
